Winternationals unfinished business for Judd
Posted: Tuesday, May 26, 2009

A Perth-based drag racer, Robin Judd is set to finish runner-up in the 2008-09 Australian Group One Top Doorslammer championship series at the 42nd annual Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway near Ipswich, Qld, June 4-7.

Judd only needs to qualify his William Buck/K & B Exclusive ’59 Studebaker in the eight-car Doorslammer field at the season-ending Winternationals event to secure second place in the eight-event championship series.

It will be the second time Judd has been runner-up in the Top Doorslammer championship. He finished second in the inaugural 1999/2000 series.

After a season-long battle with archrival, defending and new Australian Top Doorslammer champion John Zappia, Judd will go into the Winternationals 203 points behind Zappia and 87 and 105 points ahead of former champions, third and fourth placed Ben Bray and Gary Phillips.

By qualifying, Judd will earn at least 40pts. The Winternationals carries a maximum of 110 points. For Bray to overhaul Judd he would have to win the event and Judd not qualify.

While Judd’s focus will be on qualifying, he has far greater goals at the Winternationals, to beat Zappia at the season-finale event, win the event and be the first Doorslammer racer in Australia to record a 5.7-second pass.

Judd was the first Australian Doorslammer racer to run a 5.8-second pass, at Perth Motorplex in November last year. He has since run a 5.861sec; his quickest-ever pass to date, at Perth Motorplex in March this year.

At Willowbank this season, Zappia has won both championship events, while Judd has been runner-up both times. Judd’s quickest-ever pass at Willowbank is 5.907sec, while Zappia’s is 5.858sec. Judd has run seven five-second passes at Willowbank and Zappia nine.

Judd and Zappia also raced a history-making Tin Top Titles final at Willowbank in April, which saw Australia’s first side-by-side five-second and quickest-ever side-by-side pass and Australia’s third fastest-ever side-by-side pass when Judd ran a 5.946sec at 242.20mph against Zappia’s 5.858sec at 246.58mph.

Judd (240.77mph) and Maurice Fabietti (248.07mph) also ran the country’s second fastest side-by-side pass at the same event.

“We have been chasing Zap (Zappia) all season. He has certainly been on his game and I know our performances have pushed him.

“Points-wise we are practically unbeatable for second place in the championship and the William Buck/K & B Exclusive team certainly wants to finish the season in second place.

“We are really motivated to perform well and beat Zap at the last event. If we do, we will win the event. We also want to be the first to run a 5.70sec pass and we would like to take back the Top Doorslammer National Elapsed Time (ET) record we won from then lost back to Zappia during the season,” Judd said.

“To take back the ET record, we will probably have to run low 5.8sec or high 5.7sec passes and to win the Winternationals, several low 5.8sec passes. I know our William Buck/K & B Exclusive ’59 Studebaker and crew are up to the task.

“Willowbank Raceway is one of our favourite tracks; we have had some good results and run quick times and fast speeds there and if we can get a handle on the track conditions early, I believe we should have a good race meeting,” Judd said.
