Robin Judd wins the Australian Nationals
Posted: Monday, September 14, 2009

Robin Judd won Top Doorslammer at the 44th annual Fuchs Australian Nationals at Western Sydney Dragway yesterday, Sunday, September 13.

It is Judd’s first major Australian title and ANDRA Gold Christmas Tree (trophy).

Judd (5.850sec at 245.67mph) ran his quickest-ever pass to defeat archrival John Zappia (5.875/243.41) in the final. The race was quickest side-by-side Doorslammer pass ever recorded in Australia and the closest-ever in the 10 years Top Doorslammer has been run at the Australian Nationals.

During Saturday’s qualifying, Judd recorded his then quickest-ever pass to top qualify with a 5.851sec at 247.07mph.

Judd (5.874/245.94) defeated Victor Bray (6.106/235.35) in round one of eliminations, then with a 5.951sec at 244.92mph, Bray’s son Ben (6.074/243.55) in the semi final.

Judd’s previous best result at a Nationals was in 2000 – the first year Top Doorslammer was run at the Nationals – when he qualified third and was runner-up. Juddn was runner-up in the 1999/2000 championship series.

At last year’s Nationals, Judd qualified second before the event was rained-out and eliminations abandon. He was again runner-up in the championship series.

An ecstatic Judd said he was pleased and excited to win the Nationals.

“Thanks go to William Buck and K & B Exclusive and the William Buck/K & B Exclusive Studebaker crew,” Judd said.

“Seventeen cars entered the Top Doorslammer class. With only the eight quickest cars racing in eliminations, we managed to top qualify on Saturday with a PB, 5.851sec at 247mph.

“Round one (eliminations) on Sunday saw us beat Castrol-sponsored Victor Bray with a 5.87sec to Victor’s 6.10sec, then his son Ben with a 5.95sec to 6.07sec in the semi.

“The final was an all WA affair with us again up against last season's (series) champion and my nemesis, John Zappia. It was the quickest side-by-side pass in the (Top Doorslammer) bracket's history. We run another PB, a 5.850sec to defeat Zappia's 5.875sec. It was a great drag race.

Judd and Zappia are now locked together with 165 points each after the second round of the 2009/2010 ANDRA Pro Series drag racing championship series.
