Judd leads championship after Sydney rainout
Posted: Monday, February 22, 2010

Perth-based Chartered Accountant, Robin Judd, has edged closer to winning the 2009/2010 Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) Pro Series Top Doorslammer Championship despite last weekend’s (February 12-13) Summernationals at Sydney Dragway being abandoned due to heavy rain.

Judd, who was looking for his third-straight event win after winning the 2009 (September) Australian Nationals in Sydney and Goldenstates (November) in Perth, will go into next week’s Westernationals at the Perth Motorplex with a 50-point lead over Maurice Fabietti and 72 points ahead of defending champion John Zappia.

The Summernationals was called off after the first Pro Series qualifying session was completed.

Running in hot and humid conditions prior to the thunderstorm and against multiple US Pro Modified champion Mike Janis, who scrapped the safety wall in his borrowed ’41 Willys, Judd recorded a 6.490sec at 236.63mph pass in his ‘59 Studebaker.

Judd’s time saw him in the eighth and final place in the eight-car field behind top qualifier Zappia (6.104/238.76), but ahead of 11 other Doorslammer competitors.

While disappointed the Summernationals event was abandoned, Judd believes, despite the trying conditions, his William Buck/K & B Exclusive team was on track to a good qualifying position and event result.

“I am disappointed the Summernationals was abandoned. No one likes to see events called off, but I am pleased that this event is out of the way and we leave Sydney with a handy championship lead.

“We made the eight (car field), but only just, not to say that we would not have be able to fix that.

“We struggled in that one qualifier to get (the car) down the track properly, but just about all the Doorslammer teams had similar problems. I think it was more the track temperature, which is something we have not had to deal with for some time,” Judd said.

Despite only running the one qualifying session, Judd and his William Buck/K & B Exclusive team did extensive data research while waiting for the rain to clear in preparation for the next Doorslammer championship round in Perth.

“We have changed our car set-up slightly and it (the car) is reacting differently to gear ratios and clutch settings. But with the down-time in Sydney, we did a lot of research on the data we have collected at the past few events and believe our set-up will now be right for Perth.

“We will go back to Perth, test on the Wednesday before the Westernationals and get the car set-up right for the event.”
