New-look Judd set for Nationals record
Posted: Monday, September 8, 2008

Australia’s quickest-ever Top Doorslammer drag racer, Perth-based Robin Judd, is looking to break a six-year drought at this weekend’s (September 12-14) 43rd annual Fuchs Australian Nationals at Western Sydney Dragway (WSID).

Judd recorded Australia’s quickest-ever Top Doorslammer pass when he ran a 5.907sec at 240.77mph during the third qualifying session at the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway in June.

Judd’s record time backed up his earlier second session time of 5.947sec at 241.54mph, which established a new Australian Elapsed Time record.

At the Winternationals, Judd became the sixth Australian Top Doorslammer racer to run a five-second pass.

While Judd is keen to again run into the five-second zone at WSID, he is also looking to break a Nationals hoodoo.

Judd was runner-up at the 2000 Nationals and lost in the semi final at the 2001 event. However, since then he has lost in round one at the next four Nationals (2002-2005) and did not qualifying for the eight-car field at the 2006 and last year’s events.

Judd, who was the first Doorslammer racer in Australia (and the World) to run a 6.1second pass, a 6.179sec at the 2000 Winternationals and the fifth to run a 6.0second pass in Australia when he recorded a 6.095sec at Perth Motorplex in December 2004, said he is going to the Nationals to win and run more five-second passes.

“We have been racing for 10 years now and at times it’s been a long hard road, but the momentum and enthusiasm has lifted dramatically in the William Buck/K & B Exclusive team after reaching such a great performance milestone,” Judd said.

“Being top of the heap in Australia’s most competitive class (Top Doorslammer) is great, but now we have to stay there, which includes going to the final.

“Over the past 12 months we have had Stuart Rowland, who is a very accomplished racer in his own right, join our team as a consultant/co-crew chief, he has bought a new dimension to the team.

“And my workshop manager, Andrew Fowler, works tirelessly on making sure we have a trouble free run with our engines. My crew, Lee Brailsford, Eric Gaudieri, Chris Fowler, Frank Gaudieri and Khea Borkowski have also worked hard preparing and tuning a fantastic race car.

“The key to racing in Top Doorslammer today is consistency, being able to run in the 6.0second zone all day and dip into a five-second when necessary.

“We are going to Sydney to win the Nationals and start the journey to our first Australia Top Doorslammer series championship. But it's going to be tough, there are quite a few teams that will lift this season.”

Since the Winternationals, Judd’s ’53 Studebaker has been dismantled and completely rebuilt and repainted.

“The car looks brand new and is set up for what we hope will be a record-breaking and winning season.”

Judd will also unveil a new primary sponsor, K & B Exclusive, a successful Perth-based kitchen and bathroom business looking to expand interstate, at the Nationals.
