Judd set for five-second three-peat
Posted: Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Australia’s quickest-ever Top Doorslammer drag racer, Perth-based Robin Judd, is looking to run a five-second three-peat at this weekend’s 37th Goldenstates at Perth Motorplex, Kwinana Beach.

The event is also round two of the 2008/09 Australian Top Doorslammer championship series.

Judd has recorded five-second passes, considered a milestone in Top Doorslammer drag racing, at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway, Ipswich and at Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID).

Judd is eager to run a five-second pass at his home track and go into the record book as having run five-second passes at all three championship series tracks – Kwinana, Willowbank and WSID.

The only Doorslammer racer to achieve a five-second three-peat is fellow Perth racer John Zappia.

Brisbane racer, Ben Bray, is the only other Doorslammer racer who could record a five-second three-peat at the event.

Judd, who is in sixth place on the all-time championship point’s list with 3021 points, is also looking for his first championship series event win at Kwinana.

Judd has won two championship series events – Tin Top Titles, Willowbank and Adelaide – both in 2000, the year he was runner-up in the 1999/2000 Australian Top Doorslammer championship.

He has also been runner-up in six championship series events.

Judd recorded Australia’s quickest-ever Top Doorslammer pass when he ran a 5.907sec at 240.77mph (387.48kph) during qualifying at the Winternationals at Willowbank in June.

He then backed up at that time with a 5.947sec at 241.54mph (388.72kph) to establish a new Australian Elapsed Time record.

Then at the 43rd annual Australian Nationals at WSID in September, Judd ran 5.978sec at 243.46mph (391.81kph).

While winning the Australian Top Doorslammer championship series is a major priority, Judd believes his William Buck/K & B Exclusive ’59 Studebaker now has the consistency to regularly run five-second passes.

“We are really pleased with the consistency we are now getting. We have got a good car, it is running some quick numbers and while winning the championship is our major priority, we want to run a five-second pass at the Perth Motorplex,” Judd said.

At the recent Motorplex season-opening event, Judd ran a 6.063sec at 215.31mph (346.50kph) in qualifying before winning the Top Comp final with a 6.155sec at 237.46mph (382.15kph).

“Hopefully that win is a sign of things to come at the Motorplex this weekend.

“We almost ran a five-second pass in qualifying, but the (supercharger) blower came loose at 5.4sec, cutting the engine and I rolled through (the finish line) for a 6.06sec. The sectional times to half-track pointed to a mid 5.90sec pass.

“Earlier in the year we would have been happy running a 6.06sec. Now there is the expectation to try and run a five-second pass each time we go out on the track.

“The key to racing in Top Doorslammer is consistency, being able to run in the 6.0-second zone and reel off a five-second pass when necessary.”
