Judd is truckin’ to Sydney
Posted: Wednesday, February 11, 2009

A train derailment late last month forced Perth Top Doorslammer racer Robin Judd to make last minute changes to his transport plans for this weekend’s (February 13-14) sixth annual Summernationals’ event at Sydney.

Judd, who is currently in second place in the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship series, normally transports his William Buck/K & B Exclusive ’59 Studebaker race car and equipment in a purpose-built container by rail from Perth to the East Coast events.

However, due to a major train derailment east of Kalgoorlie on Friday, January 30, Judd could not risk waiting for the line to reopen so was forced to arrange for his container to travel to Sydney by road transport.

Former Australian Top Doorslammer champion and 11-times Australian Top Alcohol champion, Gary Phillips from Brisbane, who was competing at the January 30-31 Perth Motorplex Australian Top Alcohol championship series round, also had a container carrying his Top Alcohol Funny Car booked to go to Sydney by rail.

After the Perth event, Judd and Phillips arranged to have their containers travel to Sydney on the same transporter.

While the containers arrived at Sydney Dragway earlier this week, the road transport cost to ensure the cars arrived in time for the Summernationals was substantially more than the normal rail transport cost from Perth to Sydney.

“We really did not have an option,” Judd said. “While the rail line has reopened, Gary (Phillips) and I could not risk sending our containers by rail and not knowing if they (the containers) would arrive in Sydney in time for the event, so with the help of (fellow Perth racer) Matt Treasure we were able to organised the containers to be transported to Sydney by his sponsor, K-Trans WA and we appreciate their help.”

Judd and Phillips’ cars are now at Sydney Dragway, where Judd hopes to take the Top Doorslammer championship series lead from fellow Perth racer, John Zappia.

“We are looking forward to the event and are due for a change in luck. It would be great to win the event and run another 5.8sec pass in the process,” Judd said.
