Judd looks to close championship gap
Posted: Thursday, February 12, 2009

Australia’s quickest-ever Top Doorslammer drag racer, Perth-based Robin Judd, is looking to take the lead in the 2008/09 Australian Top Doorslammer championship series at this weekend’s Wynn’s Spitfire Summernationals at Sydney Dragway, Eastern Creek.

Judd, who is currently in second place in the championship series with 260 points, could take the series lead if he finishes the event ahead of series leader, fellow Perth racer John Zappia (290 points).

However, with just two qualifying sessions on Friday (February 13), Judd knows he must qualify in the top half of the eight-car field to have a chance of making the Saturday final.

Judd, who ran a 5.868-second pass at Perth Motorplex last November, then a 5.883-second pass at a non-championship event at Perth in December, said while it would be good to run another 5.8-sec pass at Sydney, taking the championship series lead is the main priority this weekend.

“This event is going to be tight with just a two-shot qualifier,” said Judd, who qualified in second place at the Australian Nationals, Sydney (round one), third at the Goldenstate Titles, Perth (round two) and second at Willowbank (round three).

“Our strategy will be to try and get into the field with the first qualifier and then in the top half in the second qualifier.

“Then it will be a matter of going rounds. We need to match John Zappia and hopefully finish in front of him at the end of the event.”

To add to the pressure of trying to record a good qualifying time in his William Buck/K & B Exclusive ’59 Studebaker, the Judd team will be running a new engine, which has not had any track time.

“After the Willowbank round, we fitted a new engine and when we went to test at the Perth Motorplex on January 31, we found the new (engine) block had developed a small oil leak, which meant our testing program for this weekend’s event was cut short.

“We found the problem and fixed it, but we would have liked to have had a few passes with the new engine before going to Sydney.”

After finishing runner-up to Zappia at the last two championship rounds, Judd is hoping that one of his fellow racers can put the championship leader away in an early elimination round if Zappia and he do manage to qualify.

“While Top Doorslammer produces really close racing, Zap (Zappia) is the most consistent and I am right behind him. But, realistically, for us to take the championship lead we need to first qualify and for Zappia not to make the final and, hopefully, we do and also pick up some bonus points with quickest ET and fastest speed of the round along the way.

“It would be good if one of the other racers knocked Zap off in round one or two; it would make closing the (championship) gap that much easier,” Judd said.
